Help us achieve International Dark Sky Status
The Clwydian Range and Dee Valley AONB need your help. We are seeking letters of support to establish the AONB as a Dark Sky Landscape. Our application to the International Dark Sky Association represents the joint endeavour of the AONB and partners working towards one dark sky. In achieving this accolade, we hope to push forward with our mission of restoring and protecting the dark skies whilst raising awareness within and beyond the region.
How can you help?
As part of our bid we must demonstrate “Broad support for dark skies from a wide range of community organizations such as chambers of commerce, local electrical utilities, IDA chapters, lighting retailers, homeowners associations, and others.”
Should you want to support the AONB please send a letter of support to

Over recent years the AONB have delivered a variety of activities to raise awareness of and taken steps to protect the night sky including;
- Hosting public engagement events; from bat walks and stargazing to night time stand up paddleboarding.
- Retrofitting of lighting at Loggerheads Country Park
- Specialist publications and literature
- Business engagement workshops
The team along with specialist support and the three local planning authorities of the AONB – Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham have also developed Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG). The document provides detailed advice for prospective developers, planning officers and others about how to successfully accommodate development in and around the AONB without harming the special qualities of the area. The SPG is an important consideration in the determination of planning applications and planning appeals.
